Equine

I offer a mobile service visiting your horse(s) in their yard. I have the K21 plate which comes in two halves with four independent zones, one for each leg.

Due to the Theraplate being non-invasive and concussion free it can be used from the very start of any recovery and/or rehabilitation program.

The Theraplate is not just for recovery or rehabilitation though, it can be utilised for maintenance and prevention too.

WHAT CAN THERAPLATE BE USED FOR?

Theraplate can be used for many, many conditions. Essentially anything that can be helped by increased circulation can be helped by Theraplate! Here are a few examples of some common conditions.

SWELLING/INFLAMMATION: Swelling and inflammation can be secondary to a lot of conditions and not always visible. For example, we can see the swelling after a clear injury such as a kick, or an infection like Cellulitis. However, some inflammation is not quite so obvious to the eye, like that associated with arthritis or laminitis. Inflammation is the part of the body’s defense system. It is the process by which the immune system recognises and removes harmful and foreign stimuli and begins the healing process. Inflammation can be acute (starts rapidly and becomes severe in a short time) or chronic (slow, long term, lasting for prolonged periods of time). Improving circulation increases blood flow and more oxygen and nutrients will be utilised in the tissues. Oxygen and nutrients fuel the growth of new tissue. Healthy circulation decreases the likelihood of acute inflammation persisting. In some instances, simply reducing inflammation is enough to reduce pain and accelerate recovery.

LAMINITIS: Helping to improve blood flow into the hooves can aid in clearing and cleaning the circulatory and lymphatic systems. An increase in circulation helps to reduce inflammation, aid pain relief and stimulate hoof growth too.

ARTHRITIS: Increasing circulation throughout the body includes the joints and as a result the synovial membrane is exposed to a steady supply of nourishing oxygen and nutrients as well reducing inflammation.

TENDON INJURY: Improving circulation delivers essential oxygen and nutrients to fuel the growth of healthy new tissue after injury. It also decreases the likelihood of acute inflammation persisting and contributing to chronic disease developement.

EQUINE METABOLIC SYNDROME (EMS): EMS is similar to type 2 diabetes in humans, insulin resistance. One of the major symptoms of EMS is laminitis. As above, Theraplate can be used to help laminitis on it’s own, but it can also help with EMS directly. Horses with EMS often also have poor circulation. Increased circulation is a direct result of exercise and it is proven that exercise improves glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity, but for a horse suffering with laminitis exercise of any significance can be difficult. A session on a Theraplate can increase circulation by up to five times the resting rate safely and effectively without any undue stress to the horse. In fact, the horse doesn’t even need to leave its stable!

What to expect from your sessions

Session length is determined by what the horse is going on for, and whether it has been on a Theraplate before or not. See the Prices page for a guide to time allowed.

For a horse’s first time, the session will focus on introducing the animal to the Theraplate, acclimatising it to the feeling when on it etc. The aim is to have a relaxed horse that wants to enjoy the session!

During a condition targeted session, the horse will have multiple sets of 15-20mins stood on the Theraplate. They will then have a period of approximately 15mins rest between each set. Number of sets needed may be dependent on the condition being supported, this will be discussed with you during the first visit. If multiple horses and/or people are booked in at the same time then they will alternate so the Theraplate is always in use to be time efficient.

Horses may stay on the Theraplate between sets if they’re happy. They can eat whilst on the Theraplate, and can be ridden the same day, immediately before or immediately after if you wish. There are no restrictions other than those of the condition(s) the horse is being treated for.

I will need somewhere flat and firm to set up. Ideally access to an electrical socket will be needed but I do have a small battery pack if power is an issue. I will provide any necessary extension leads.

We will have a full discussion whilst setting up and there will be a consent form to sign.
